We recognize that not everyone who gets pregnant, has an abortion or needs an IUD is a cisgender woman. We welcome transgender and non-binary clients at our clinic. We do our best to be fully gender inclusive, and we are committed to providing excellent, compassionate, client-centred care to everyone who visits our clinic.
If you would like to come here for services, please let us know what name you would like us to use and we will make sure that is on your chart, even if it is not on your Care Card or other ID. You can also let us know your pronouns either when you call and make your appointment, or, if it is more comfortable, you can email us ahead of time. We will make sure that staff know ahead of time as to which pronouns to use. You’re also welcome to ask questions you may have, or let us know if there is anything we can do to help make your visit to our clinic feel more comfortable.
A few other things you may want to know:
• At this time,our staff use she/her/ or they pronouns.
• We have different levels of knowledge and experience around working with trans and non-binary communities and with trans health, but some of our staff are knowledgeable and experienced in this area.
• Because of the risks associated with anti-choice protestors and abusive partners, we have security in place at our clinics (this is true of most abortion clinics). If you are masculine in appearance or your ID doesn’t match your appearance, it may help facilitate your visit to the clinic if you let us know this in advance. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, only clients are allowed in the clinic at this time.
• We use the medical terms for body parts, such as vagina and uterus. We know that some people do not use these terms to describe their body, but we feel that with the medical procedures we do, clear and consistent terminology helps with understanding and safety. If you have terms you prefer us to use, please let us know and we will do our best to use them when and if we can.
We have a developing a list of gender inclusive resources (sexual health organizations, counsellors, and talk-lines that do work around reproductive health, full spectrum doulas etc.), and whether or not you decide to come here, you are welcome to ask us for those or suggest some for us to pass on to others.
