Medical abortion at a distance

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we want to offer as much as possible the option of a medical abortion at a distance to enable you to stay home and stay safe. We will talk to you more about how this works when you call to make an appointment.

To have a medical abortion (“abortion pill”), the pregnancy must be less than 10 weeks from the first day of your last period. We will confirm this with you at your first appointment. It’s good to know ahead of time what to expect from a medical abortion. In some cases, we can offer you a medical abortion without you having to come into our clinic.

Areas we serve for this:
We are only able to see those who live in Vancouver Coastal or Fraser Health authorities. If you live outside of this area, you can can call the Sex Sense line at 1-800-739-7367 to see if there is a medical abortion provider in your area or contact Willow Clinic.

The process:
We want you to complete the consent to electronic communication and the medical abortion questionaire after you have spoken to our booking staff and they have made your appointment with us. You will receive information from us about how to do this once you have your appointment booked.

During your appointment, you will meet with the doctor by telephone to discuss your medical history and make sure a medical abortion is safe for you, and that its OK to do it by distance (some people will need to be seen on site at the clinic for safety reasons). Then, if you are able to move forward with a virtual medical abortion, you will also talk to a counsellor who will explain how to use the medications. When you talk with the counsellor it’s best if you can have access to a computer or a tablet  as there will be some forms for you to look at as the counsellor explains about the medical abortion process. The medical abortion page has more information about how a medical abortion works.

After this online appointment is finished the pharmacy will call you to arrange to get the medications to you.

Follow-up
You must have a follow-up with the doctor about 8-14 days after your first appointment. This is very important. She will talk to you to find out if the abortion is complete. After this you may continue to have bleeding, which may be heavy at times and you may pass more clots. The pregnancy usually stops when you take the medication but if you are in the less than 1% who still has a growing pregnancy, you will be scheduled for an aspiration abortion which we will do here at our clinic.

You will have a final online visit with the doctor at this time to make sure everything is okay. This appointment is very important and you must have it to be safe. You will take a pregnancy test before this appointment. If this test is positive and you have no on-going pregnancy symptoms, you will do another test after 1 more week and have another appointment with the doctor. These tests are included in the package you get from us with the medications.
